Acorn FCCLA officers recently participated in the American Association of Family & Consumer Sciences (AAFCS) H1N1 Initiative. To help prepare individuals, families, and communities for this flu season and minimize the spread of the H1N1 virus, AAFCS has partnered with the Soap and Detergent Association for “Taking It to the Streets.” Through this initiative, AAFCS and FCCLA members are given resources and tools to lead H1N1 prevention activities in their neighborhoods, schools, and workplaces.
Trent Lyle, Acorn FCCLA President reports: “After brainstorming ways that FCCLA could make a difference at the local Acorn Campus and researching several websites, we decided to use posters and pamphlets obtained from http://www.cleaning101.com to celebrate International Clean Hands Week.” Erica Goss, Acorn FCCLA Vice President of Public Relations added: “We hung posters all over the school and distributed age appropriate pamphlets to elementary and high school students encouraging them to practice good hygiene and hand washing techniques. We also made these pamphlets available to parents during parent teacher conferences.”
“Mrs. Hays has reinforced these messages by providing several daily writing prompts in FACS classes throughout the semester dealing with good hygiene and how to avoid spreading viral infections like the flu,” said Katie Bryant, family dynamics student and Acorn FCCLA Vice President of Programs. “We have had several students, including myself, who have suffered from the flu this fall; but we hope our efforts have helped to keep these numbers lower than they might have been otherwise!”
